Recovery Funds Saves Job at Fort Lauderdale Art House

Art Job Saved! Robert E. Davis Reels It In at Cinema Paradiso

Broward Cultural Division distributed economic recovery funds to 17 arts organizations including Cinema Paradiso, which retained a position that was previously slated for elimination due to financial cut backs.  Robert E. Davis assists with programming daily film screenings, special film series events, and educational programs while successfully serving a diverse and art-conscious community.

To date, 47 arts jobs in Broward County were retained through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and a national American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) enacted through the Obama Administration.

Cinema Paradiso is one of South Florida's most unique theaters. Operated by the Broward County Film Society and home of the annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, it is known for its role as Broward County's only full time Art House theater, showcasing the finest in independent and foreign films, along with documentaries and classic films not shown anywhere else on the big screen.

As a hub for the local and international film community, filmmakers, press, investors, celebrities, and movie fans from around the world gather during the annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival; and many will spend the bulk of their time in Fort Lauderdale at Cinema Paradiso!

Davis will specifically assist with the programming of The Italia Festa and the Perrier French Film Festival, selecting, procuring and writing program notes for the 24 Year Retrospective; and negotiating celebrity appearances. He will also be involved in the preparation of the Annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival – the longest running film festival in the world. All this saved, through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and a national American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Through the economic stimulus package, Broward County’s Cultural Division received a $250,000 grant, and in turn re-granted the funds through an ARRA Lifeline application process. These funds were specifically directed to restore jobs in the arts, endorsing the notion that the non-profit arts industry is an important sector of the economy. Arts organizations had the opportunity to apply for funds to provide salary support for an existing staff member who would otherwise have been laid off; or to re-engage artistic/contracted services already let go.

Even before the Obama Administration signed the ARRA into law on February 17, 2009, County staff was immediately mobilized to respond. The Broward Cultural Council as well as the Cultural Division moved quickly to execute these grants and distribute the funds to the cultural organizations. Also, a Broward County Stimulus Grants Coordination Office, www.broward.org/recovery was established for the purpose of centralizing the identification, development, review, approval and tracking for grants and contracts resulting from ARRA. The office is managed by Linda Ross, stimulus grants coordinator with Broward County.

The Twentieth Annual Fort Lauderdale

Fleet Week Busy and Exciting for Community

By Bob Hein

The rain and the wind gusts made entry into Port everglades challenging for the Navy ships but Monday morning they all safely arrived and the Twentieth Annual Fort Lauderdale Fleet Week officially commenced. The weather cleared and the All Hands Party at the Hard Rock Seminole Café, Paradise Village was a great success.

Ship tours for prearranged groups, including a large number of local area students, began on Tuesday morning and continued throughout the week. The tours were conducted by crew members of the ships who were assisted by volunteers from the Broward County Council, other area Navy Leagues and Broward Navy Days.

Crew members not on duty took part in numerous community relations events, including visits to local schools, hospitals, and convalescent care facilities, while 30 Sailors spent 3 days assisting with a Habitat for Humanity project.  It wasn’t all work…there was a golf tournament, athletic and damage control competitions, and numerous opportunities to enjoy local area attractions which included a fishing tournament, shopping trips, airboat rides and complimentary rides on the Jungle Queen.

On Tuesday evening, a Junior Officers Party that has become “Famous Fleet Wide” was held at Briny Riverfront Irish Pub at Las Olas Riverfront.  Briny is a Community Affiliate of the Broward County Navy League. The owners, Mike and Aileen Brennen are the event’s traditional sponsor, As usual they did an outstanding job of hosting more then 150 Junior Officers as well as Navy Leaguers and local citizens. There was complementary food, drink, music and dancing.  A Chief Petty Officers Party sponsored by the CPOA was held at the Coral Ridge Yacht Club, and was also very successful.

On Wednesday, the various ships and the submarine hosted the Celebrity Chef’s Luncheon, an event were local area chef’s prepare lunch for the commanding officer, selected crew members, and invited guests, in the respective wardrooms.  That evening, “Hit the Beach” parties for tthe crews were held at various locations throughout the beach area. The Boca Raton Council of the Navy League held a Sailor of the Year party for our guest ships .

The ships and units participating in  Fleet Week were:

USS Iwo Jima               LPH-7         Assault Ship

USS Independence     LCS-2          The Navy’s newest ship

USS Porter                      DDG-78       Destroyer

USS Newport News        SSN-750      Submarine

USS Halyburton             FFG-40        Frigate

FGS Hessen F-221          German Frigate

USCGC  Key Biscayne  WPB-1339  Coast Guard Cutter

Naval Beach Group Two

Second Marine Division, USMC

Thursday night, April 29. the FGS Hessen, the German Frigate, held a reception aboard ship. It turned out to be far more than just a reception. CDR. Dirk Gaertner FGRN and his crew held one of the finest reception in memory. It turned out to be a full  meal of German food from horderves to dessert. The food was fantastic and the drinks were great, particularly the beer.

Stars were shining brightly above Friday evening’s onboard reception on the USS Iwo Jima.  More then 1000 invited guests shared in the goodwill exhibited by our Navy during Fort Lauderdale’s Fleet Week 2010. The reception was the culmination of the week’s activities and the navy's way of showing its appreciation.

Civilian guests enjoyed the hanger bay festivities as well as the numerous static displays on the flight deck. The event was well attended by local dignitaries and Navy Brass. Congressman Ron Klein was there, along with several area mayors including Fort Lauderdale Mayor John P. Seiler who presented the key to the city to Capt. Jeff Amick, USN, captain of the USS Iwo Jima. Numerous business leaders and Congressional hopeful, Alan West were also present.

The Navy was represented by Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Gary Roughead, USN, RADM Townsend (Tim) Alexander, USN, U.S.Commander of the Navy Region Southeast, Rear Admiral Michelle Howard, USN Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group Two. She was the first African-American to command a US Navy ship. It was a memorable event and a fitting close to a memorable week.

Former Stuntman Loves His Career Change

Cruise Director Takes a Fall from Time to Time

Former Stuntman Not Afraid

to Become Part of the Show

Ray Brasted

John Grantham is not your usual cruise director and that can be claimed even if one hasn't experienced a lot of cruises. How many former hollywood stuntmen do you know who emcee cruise line shows, mingle with guests aboard ship and lines up entertainment for the pleasure of passengers?

A big man with broad shoulders and ready smile, Grantham spent twenty years falling off horses, being shot at and beat up in the name of show business and is not what you would imagine when asked to describe a typical cruise director. And Grantham understands that. "It really is amazing. It isn't something I aspired to do," he said with a smile.

A chance conversation brought the Naples, FL native to the attention of Celebrity Cruises and he was quickly hired. Having worked as an actor and stuntman in Las Angeles for many years and having been around many well known professionals in the theater and movies gives Grantham an insight into talent and working with entertainers.

Finding the right blend of entertainment and special programs is an art in its own right and pleasing several thousands passengers week to week takes the courage of a man used to falling off horses. "Entertainment is very subjective. Something I like, might not be liked by the next person," Grantham noted.

But he keeps his eyes open for up-and-comers and on the first night of recent cruise introduced Will Foraker to the audience. Grantham "discovered" the 22-year-old playing in a hidden corner of the Celebrity Solstice and was wowed by the young man's talent.

Foraker did not disappoint and for the rest of the cruise drew ever increasing crowds to his corner of the ship. We agree that many who read this will one day be able to say they knew him "when".

Maybe it is because of his years of auditioning for parts, and learning to move forward when faced with rejection, but Grantham brings a sensitivity to his job when working with the artists who put on a show every night.

"I think I can connect with our audience," he added.

Ed. Note: At the time of this interview Grantham was preparing to leave the Celebrity Solstice for a vacation and then to join the Celebrity Equinox in Europe.
